Description

The current Cougar Peak lookout, built in 1952, is the only standard 1936-model hip-roof L-4 ground house with catwalk on the Lolo National Forest. This structure replaced an L-4 cab with gable roof built in 1930. Cougar overlooks the Clark Fork River Valley and has a spectacular view of the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness. Cougar was last regularly staffed in the mid-1980's, and is currently on the cabin rental program. An interesting aspect of Cougar Peak is the unique rock art created by former lookouts. The earliest rock inscription is dated 1921, surrounded by numerous other rock carvings of names, dates, and artwork by lookouts of the past. A 1995 Passport in Time project saw the reroofing of the lookout, and the replacing and repairing of windows and the door, as well as other repairs.
