Description

The honor of NHLR listing #800 goes to Salmon Mountain Lookout on the Bitterroot National Forest. First developed as a tent camp with alidade, in 1938, it was replaced with a log L-3 cupola with windows around the first floor. This classic 1936 model L-4 ground house with catwalk was built in 1949 and is staffed by volunteers. Salmon Mountain Lookout is the only L-4 ground cab remaining in the area. Located in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, less than a mile south of the Magruder Corridor and the Montana Road, Salmon Mountain also looks into the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness to the north of the corridor. In recent years, it has been staffed by a volunteer group.
