The Sterling Forest in the New York / New Jersey Highlands is much in the news as federal, state and local governments deal with successive landowners on plans for development and protection of one of the last great open spaces near New York City. On top of it all sits Sterling Fire Tower. Built by the State of New York in 1923, the 60’ Aermotor LS-40 tower with 7x7’ steel cab has not been staffed for many years. In 1993 members of the NY/NJ Highlands Group of the Forest Fire Lookout Association replaced the glass in the tower. A 15’ x 25’ ground cabin remains in good condition. The lookout was transferred to the Palisades Interstate Park System in 1998, then to the Bear Mountain State Park Fire Control Bureau and is now under the control of Sterling Forest State Park. The tower ceased being operated by volunteers when Sterling Forest State Park was created in 1998. The tower is very seldom staffed or operated with very little maintenance and none whatsoever by volunteers. Sterling fire tower was placed on the Federal Register of Historic Places on June 12, 2006 along with the observers cabin.
